The Ashanti Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament has expressed unwavering support for the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following a High Court judgment delivered on Monday.
In a statement signed by the Secretary of the Ashanti Caucus, Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the MPs described Chairman Wontumi as a “fearless, resilient and selfless leader” whose contributions to the growth and electoral successes of the NPP in the Ashanti Region and across the country remain significant.
The caucus maintained that the court’s decision does not mark the end of Chairman Wontumi’s political career, stressing that the judgment is subject to appeal under Ghana’s judicial system.
“While we remain steadfast in our respect for the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, we equally affirm that the constitutional right to challenge judicial decisions through the appellate courts is fundamental to our democracy,” the statement said.
The MPs expressed confidence that justice would prevail through the appellate process and urged party members not to lose faith in the regional chairman.
The caucus also rejected what it described as attempts to portray the judgment as the end of Chairman Wontumi’s public and political life, arguing that the development should instead strengthen the resolve of party faithful to support him.
The statement further raised concerns over what it called a growing perception of selective justice and unequal application of the law. It argued that efforts to combat illegality must be impartial and free from political influence.
“Justice must never become an instrument for settling political scores or intimidating political opponents,” the caucus stated.
Calling for calm, the MPs urged NPP members, particularly those in the Ashanti Region, to remain united and avoid actions that could undermine public order while the legal process continues.
The caucus assured Chairman Wontumi of its continued support, describing the legal challenge as a broader test of the party’s commitment to justice, fairness and democratic principles.
The statement concluded with a message of encouragement to the regional chairman, saying the Ashanti Caucus would stand firmly with him throughout the legal process.
