The Paramount Chief of the Tolon Traditional Area, Naa Yab Tolon Naa Abubakari Sulemana, has died, throwing the Tolon Traditional Area and the wider Dagbon Kingdom into mourning.
Naa Major (Rtd) Sulemana Abubakari was a retired senior military officer of the Ghana Armed Forces who was enskinned as Tolon Naa in 2019 by the late Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II.
Before his enskinment, the late Paramount Chief played a significant role in the Dagbon peace process, contributing to efforts to restore peace and unity to the traditional area.
His death has been described by the Member of Parliament for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, as a major loss not only to Tolon but also to Dagbon and Ghana.
In a condolence message issued on Sunday, Mr Iddrisu described the late Tolon Naa as a “towering figure” whose influence extended beyond the traditional area.
He said Naa Sulemana was a fearless advocate for the progress, unity and dignity of Dagbon, earning respect across political and traditional divides through his wisdom, courage and commitment to development.
“On a personal level, I have lost a father, mentor, and trusted friend whose guidance and counsel I deeply cherished,” the MP said.
Mr Iddrisu extended condolences to the Royal Family, Chiefs and people of the Tolon Traditional Area and all mourners, saying the late Tolon Naa’s legacy would endure in the history of Dagbon.
He prayed to Allah to forgive his shortcomings, reward his lifetime of service and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
