A 45-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the alleged attempted murder of a farmer at Abotia-Dorfor in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.
The suspect, identified as Apeti Afeletey from Fodzoku-Afukpakofe, is alleged to have attacked the farmer while he was working on his farm at about 4 p.m. yesterday.
According to reports, the farmer suddenly noticed a shadow behind him. When he looked up, he allegedly saw Afeletey approaching him naked and with rasta-style hair, causing him to become frightened.
The farmer reportedly raised an alarm and called for help. A neighbouring farmer who heard the distress call quickly contacted other community members.
The youth of Abotia subsequently rushed to the scene, rescued the farmer and apprehended the suspect.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly led the youth to a location where he had allegedly hidden the motorbike he had used. The motorbike was found concealed in a bush, with some strands of the suspect’s rasta-style hair reportedly found on it.
The suspect and the motorbike were then taken to the palace of the Chief of Abotia, Togbe Korku Mensah.
At the palace, the suspect reportedly identified his community and family members, prompting the chief to invite his relatives. The family confirmed that he was their son and said he had no known history of mental illness.
According to the suspect’s uncle, Afeletey works at a galamsey site and had returned home about a week earlier to attend his late mother’s burial.
The uncle said that on the day of the incident, the suspect took his younger brother’s motorbike at about 10 a.m., claiming he was going to take an aunt to the clinic.
His phone was reportedly switched off throughout the day. The family later received a call at about 5:45 p.m. informing them that he had allegedly attempted to attack a farmer at Abotia.
The family expressed shock over the incident, noting that the suspect is married and has children.
The victim has since been taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
The suspect has been handed over to the police together with the motorbike for further investigation.
The incident has reportedly left residents of Abotia-Dorfor frightened and concerned about their safety.
