KMA moves to clear billboard clutter from Kumasi

Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi Addressing Kumasi over pending decongestion exercise

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is set to tighten regulations on outdoor advertising in the metropolis, with plans to reduce billboard clutter and introduce digital advertising boards from 2027.

The move, according to the Assembly, is aimed at restoring order to the city’s major roads and improving the visual appearance and safety of public spaces.

Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang, announced the plans during an engagement with 28 registered advertisers in the metropolis, according to a Facebook post by the KMA on Monday, September 7.

The Mayor said the existing billboard system had become increasingly disorganised, with advertising structures of varying sizes being erected without adequate regard for designated spaces.

He said the situation not only undermined the aesthetics of the city but could also create obstructions for motorists and pedestrians.

“For a city to thrive, there must be order,” he said.

Under the new policy direction, the KMA plans to determine the number of billboards that can be erected along specific stretches of road and introduce uniform requirements for their size, design and placement.

The Assembly will also establish separate specifications for major corridors and strategic locations, including the Airport Roundabout, Sofoline, Ahodwo and Bekwai Roundabout.

Specific advertising guidelines will also apply to the Kumasi Zoo, Kejetia and the Central Business District.

As part of the measures, the KMA said no billboards would be allowed along the Ahodwo-Santasi stretch until the ongoing road dualisation project is completed.

The Assembly is also expected to remove over-aged and dilapidated billboards, as well as advertising structures belonging to operators with outstanding payments.

From 2027, the KMA intends to begin replacing the current static billboard model with digital advertising boards as part of a broader effort to modernise outdoor advertising and impose greater control over commercial structures across the metropolis.

The proposed changes are expected to reshape the way advertising spaces are allocated and managed in Kumasi, while giving the Assembly greater control over the number and location of billboards within the city.
