The Ashanti Regional Executive of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has opened applications for the 2025 Ashanti Region GJA Excellence Awards, an annual initiative aimed at recognizing outstanding journalism and celebrating media practitioners whose work has made a significant impact in the region.
The awards, being held under the theme, “Celebrating Excellence, Championing Credibility: Journalism in the Age of AI,” are open to media practitioners across the Ashanti Region.
Applicants are required to submit published or broadcast works produced between January 1 and December 31, 2025, for consideration in the various award categories.
Under the entry rules, each applicant may compete in a maximum of two award divisions and submit no more than two published or broadcast works for each division. A single work, however, cannot be entered in more than one award division.
The organizers have also urged applicants to submit clear and original copies of their works and provide a recent passport-sized photograph as part of the application.
Members of the Ashanti Regional Executive, the Awards Committee and the Awards Jury are not eligible to participate in the competition.
The first division of the awards comprises beat categories, including Sports, Education, Investigative Journalism, Photojournalism, Arts and Entertainment, Business and Economy, Environment, Science and Climate, Health, Crime and Court, Agriculture, and Community Impact Journalism.
The second division will recognize practitioners in Best Feature, Best Columnist and Best Documentary categories.
A special Kofi Badu Veteran Award will also be presented to honor a veteran who has made a significant contribution to journalism. The award, named after the Chief of Staff at the Manhyia Palace, is intended to further strengthen the relationship between the Manhyia Palace and the media in the Ashanti Region.
The Ashanti Regional Journalist of the Year will also be selected through a process to be undertaken by the Awards Vetting Committee.
According to the organizers, the Awards Committee reserves the right not to present an award in any category where entries do not meet the required standard of excellence. The committee and the awards jury will also collaborate to determine the overall Ashanti Regional Journalist of the Year.
The GJA said the awards reaffirm its commitment to promoting ethical journalism, professionalism in the media, press freedom and journalism that contributes to the socioeconomic development of the Ashanti Region and Ghana.

The deadline for submission is 5:00 p.m. (17:00 GMT) on Friday, September 18, 2026.
The Regional Organizing Committee has advised prospective applicants to ensure they have a stable internet connection to facilitate the smooth submission of their entries.
