The Presidency has convened a high-level meeting with key stakeholders to strengthen Ghana’s border security and prevent the trafficking of narcotic drugs and other illicit substances through the country’s ports, airports and borders.
The meeting, scheduled for Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. at the Jubilee House, will bring together heads of institutions involved in border management, maritime security, intelligence, customs, ports, aviation and narcotics control.
According to an invitation issued by the Office of the President, the meeting will assess existing vulnerabilities in Ghana’s border security system and consider measures to improve the country’s capacity to detect and disrupt narcotics trafficking.
Key areas for discussion will include intelligence-sharing arrangements, cargo and passenger screening systems, inter-agency coordination, and the deployment of technology to strengthen efforts against drug trafficking.
Participants have also been asked to provide a brief assessment of existing security gaps and propose practical measures to improve intelligence sharing, surveillance, screening and joint enforcement operations.
The meeting is expected to be attended by the heads of relevant institutions, including the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Ghana Maritime Authority, National Intelligence Bureau, Narcotics Control Commission and Ghana Airports Company Limited.
Representatives from the Ghana Police Service–Criminal Investigations Department/INTERPOL, Ghana Link Network Services, Meridian Port Services, Tema Collection, Ghana Navy and Terminal Scanners operators are also expected to participate.
The Office of the President said the meeting reflects the urgency and national-security implications of strengthening Ghana’s border controls and combating the movement of illicit drugs through the country.
The participating institutions have been directed to be represented by their heads, accompanied by no more than one relevant technical officer.
