President John Dramani Mahama’s administration has begun land preparation for the construction of a new 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
The project is expected to replace the hospital’s existing maternity unit with a modern facility designed to provide comprehensive maternal, reproductive and child healthcare services.
The development, announced by the Presidency through the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, forms part of the government’s planned investments in major health infrastructure.
According to the statement, the new block will be constructed and equipped as a specialised mother and child healthcare facility.
It will include obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, operating theatres and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
The facility will also have a High Dependency Unit (HDU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), emergency obstetric care unit and antenatal and postnatal clinics.
The project will further provide an In-vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, alongside fertility and reproductive health clinics.
Other planned facilities include breastfeeding and family planning units, diagnostic imaging services, laboratory and blood bank facilities, a pharmacy and a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).
The new block will also provide physiotherapy and rehabilitation units as well as teaching, research and conference facilities.
The Presidency said land preparation for the project has already commenced, marking the initial phase of what is expected to become one of the major healthcare infrastructure developments at the country’s premier teaching hospital.
The project is intended to expand and modernise maternal and child healthcare infrastructure at Korle Bu while providing specialised services under one facility.
