The government has invested over USD $1 billion in transforming Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) infrastructure over recent years.
This investment has led to infrastructure improvements at TVET schools, the provision of state-of-the-art laboratories, the retooling of existing laboratories and workshops, and the supply of modern technology and machines.
A future government led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is expected to make TVET more appealing to every Ghanaian child by equipping it with modern, innovative tools.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated this at Cape Coast during the investiture of Dr. James Condua Lindsey Orleans as the first Chancellor of Cape Coast Technical University.
Speaking at the investiture, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh hinted that a future government under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership is committed to advancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training.
He emphasized that this commitment is crucial for achieving full participation in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, driving collective growth and prosperity.
He explained that the investment in TVET was a long-term measure to develop a skilled workforce for Ghana’s growth.
It was also part of a broader strategy to address youth unemployment, he noted. Dr. Prempeh highlighted that this strategic move aims to transform TVET into a significant driver of industrial growth and job creation in Ghana.
He also praised Dr. Orleans Lindsey’s business acumen, particularly in real estate, expressing confidence that his leadership would bring positive transformation to Cape Coast Technical University.
He emphasized that the NPP has already made significant investments to revitalize technical institutions, underlining the transformative impact of technical education on individuals and communities. Drawing from his experience as a former Minister for Education, Dr. Opoku Prempeh stressed the importance of strengthening technical institutions to better train Ghanaian youth, affirming that under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, TVET institutions will become places that inspire every young Ghanaian.
Representing the Minister of Education, Prof. Kingsley Nyarko, Deputy Minister of Education in charge of TVET, said the country would continue to prioritize education as the most critical factor in national development. Prof. Nyarko noted that nations that have developed and continue to progress are those that have prioritized education and made industrialization a core component of development. Industrialization, he stated, requires the creation of a knowledge society, with skill development crucial to sustaining economies and making nations prosperous and progressive.
Dr. James Condua Lindsey Orleans, the new Chancellor of Cape Coast Technical University, pledged to provide all necessary support and assistance to the Council, faculty, and support staff to transform CCTU into one of the topmost TVET institutions. He also pledged to work diligently in addressing the numerous infrastructure challenges facing the university.
