2024 elections: We’ll protect the ballot – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has issued a clarion call to Ghanaians to vote decisively for change in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Speaking at the party’s final campaign rally in Accra, Mahama urged citizens to seize the moment to “reset Ghana” and build a nation rooted in justice, opportunity, and prosperity for all.

Addressing a massive crowd of party faithful and supporters, Mahama framed the election as a critical juncture for the country. “Saturday’s election is not just another election,” he declared. “It is a defining moment for our nation. It is a choice between the Ghana we have and the Ghana we want a Ghana of opportunity, prosperity, and justice for all.”

A Vision for Change

Mahama outlined his vision for a transformative Ghana, emphasizing job creation, economic stability, and governance reforms. He reiterated his commitment to building a 24-hour economy capable of generating millions of jobs, tackling inflation, and reducing the cost of living.

“I am committed to implementing economic measures to fight inflation and make food affordable for all households,” he said. “We will run the leanest government in our country’s history, with no more than 60 ministers and deputies, cutting wasteful spending, and scrapping ex-gratia payments.”

He also pledged to wage a relentless war on corruption through “Operation Return All Loot (ORAL),” an initiative aimed at recovering stolen public funds to finance development projects.

Empowering Women and the Youth

Mahama highlighted the importance of empowering women and youth, pointing to his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, as a symbol of his commitment to gender equality. He announced plans to establish a Women’s Development Bank to support female entrepreneurs and traders.

“Our young people deserve a Ghana where their dreams can become realities,” he said. “Our women deserve true equality, safety, and the chance to reach their full potential.”

Call to Action

The former president passionately appealed to Ghanaians to turn out in large numbers on Election Day. “Your vote is your voice, your power, and the key to unlocking a better future for Ghana,” he said. “This is not a decision for another time, another election, or another generation. This is our moment, and the time is now to bring about the change we need.”

Mahama also urged party supporters to remain vigilant and protect the sanctity of the electoral process. “The National Democratic Congress will go to the polling stations with you. Together, we will police and courageously protect our votes and resist all attempts to steal them,” he affirmed.

Unity and Responsibility

Mahama cautioned against repeating the mistakes of the current administration, emphasizing that Ghanaians expect the NDC to uphold the highest standards of governance. “There is no use fighting for political power if we would come and commit the same atrocities they have inflicted on the people of Ghana these last eight years,” he said.

He concluded his speech with a message of unity, hope, and determination, greeting the crowd in multiple local languages and urging them to vote for the NDC to restore Ghana’s dignity. “December 7 is just two days away. Let’s vote wisely for a brighter future for ourselves, our children, and generations to come.”

Former President Mahama thanked party executives and supporters, encouraging them to remain resolute in the final stretch of the campaign.

Security Caution

In a pointed warning, Mr. Mahama called on security agencies, particularly the military, to resist any attempts to undermine the election. “I want to caution the government and the security system to resist the nefarious actions they are planning,” he stated, pledging the NDC’s commitment to a fair and transparent electoral process.

As Ghana approaches the polls, Mahama’s rallying cry has set the tone for what many expect to be a closely contested election.
