Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the prosecution of a National Democratic Congress (NDC) organiser who has been charged over alleged false publications and offensive comments made about him.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Dr. Bawumia said he had neither lodged a complaint nor sanctioned any prosecution against the individual, who was recently arrested and arraigned in connection with the alleged publication of false news and offensive remarks.
“The Office of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been drawn to the arrest and arraignment of an organiser of the National Democratic Congress in Agona West,” the statement said.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that he does not support the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian over speech made in his name.
“He has neither lodged any complaint nor sanctioned any prosecution against this young man or any other citizen,” the statement noted, adding that he “does not desire, and will not endorse, the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian in his name for speech.”
The former Vice President said he has endured insults and false allegations throughout his political career without resorting to the use of state institutions against his critics.
According to him, the appropriate response to offensive speech is “better speech,” while falsehoods should be countered with the truth rather than criminal prosecution or restrictive bail conditions.
Dr. Bawumia therefore appealed to the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the ongoing prosecution and any similar cases purportedly initiated on his behalf. He also called for the release of the accused to enable him to reunite with his family and resume his livelihood.
He further emphasised the importance of protecting freedom of expression, stating that Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when citizens, including political opponents, are able to express their views without fear.
Dr. Bawumia concluded by saying he forgives the accused and urged political actors across the country to focus their energies on addressing issues affecting the lives of Ghanaians rather than engaging in divisive political disputes.
