Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has announced the appointment of Hon. Lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea as his new Lead Defence Counsel in the ongoing criminal proceedings against him.
In a statement, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party said the decision was made after careful consultation and in line with his constitutional right to choose legal representation of his preference.
Chairman Wontumi explained that the appointment is aimed at ensuring his defence is presented effectively and in accordance with the law.
He expressed appreciation to his previous legal team for their dedication and services throughout the proceedings, stressing that the change in counsel should not be interpreted as a reflection of their competence or commitment.
“My decision should not be construed as a reflection on their competence or dedication but rather as an exercise of my legal right to determine the composition of my defence team,” he said.
The businessman and politician maintained that the charges against him are serious and that he remains committed to defending himself through the legal process.
He further emphasized his right to the presumption of innocence, stating that the prosecution bears the responsibility of proving every element of the alleged offences beyond reasonable doubt.
According to him, the newly appointed counsel will take the necessary legal steps to assume responsibility for the defence, review the proceedings so far, and make any required applications or submissions to protect his right to a fair hearing.
Chairman Wontumi expressed confidence in Ghana’s judicial system, saying he believes the process will be guided by the Constitution, the laws of Ghana, and the principles of justice and fairness.
He appealed to the public and all parties involved to allow the legal process to proceed without speculation or prejudice as his defence team prepares to represent him in court.
