Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has expressed gratitude to party leadership following his release from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Chairman Wontumi visited the NPP’s national headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, just a day after being granted bail, to personally thank the party’s national executives and other individuals who supported him during his detention.
He was arrested on Monday, May 27, 2024, at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters shortly after being granted bail by the police.
The arrest was in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged illegal mining activities among all alleged internal crime among others. His legal team battled for six days before securing his release, with bail conditions set at GHC 50 million.
Despite showing signs of physical weakness, Chairman Wontumi visited the party’s offices immediately after his release, emphasizing his appreciation to party figures who stood by him.
In a brief address, he specifically commended the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK), for his unwavering support.
“I came here to thank you for what you have done for me. God bless you,” he said in a statement captured on camera. Wontumi also called on party supporters to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is under control and that “everything will be okay.”
In a show of resilience, the embattled chairman engaged briefly with supporters, performing physical movements to demonstrate his fitness amid public speculation about his health.
He lifted and stretched his legs, insisting he was fit, mobile, and capable of returning to normal activities.
The case involving Chairman Wontumi’s alleged involvement in illegal mining among others remains under investigation .
