Lawyers for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, are in process to meet the bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following his arrest on Tuesday.
EOCO is demanding a surety backed by properties valued at GH₵50 million before bail can be granted to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The office also requires that ownership documents be presented for inspection and valuation to confirm the worth of the properties.
Speaking to Kumasi Mail Ashanti Regional NPP Communications Director, Paul Kwabena Yandoh, disclosed the legal team is working harder to overcome the challenge .
“EOCO is demanding a surety with about GH₵50 million worth of properties. The surety must also provide documents for EOCO to inspect and evaluate the properties before they can consider granting bail,” Yandoh said.
He further revealed that Chairman Wontumi’s lawyers are preparing to file a motion in court to request challenge the bail conditions, unfair treatment to their client citing health concerns.
“Since yesterday, I haven’t seen him. His medication is in my car, and I’m worried about his condition because we have not been allowed access to him,” Yandoh added.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday 27th May 2025 following an invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over alleged illegal mining activities. He was granted baid on monday and Tuesday afternoon and later arrested at the CID headquarters by EOCO for further questioning and has remained in their custody since.
He was later transferred to hospital when he complain of ill health according to his lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi.
His legal and political the NPP continue to push for his release, raising concerns over his health and the severity of the bail conditions.
