More than 300 young people in Nandom Municipality have benefited from employment and skills development initiatives under government programmes, the Municipal Chief Executive, Anthony Ziniel, has disclosed.
Speaking to KumasiMail as he marks one year in office, Mr. Ziniel said about 106 youth have been engaged under various modules of the Youth Employment Programme, with placements in the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Prisons Service, and the National Ambulance Service, including first responders.
In addition, 38 master craftsmen in Nandom are benefiting from the government’s apprenticeship programme, each training between five and seven apprentices, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to over 200.
“This is about equipping young people with practical skills while also supporting master craftsmen with tools to enhance training,” he explained.
He noted that Nandom is currently the second-highest beneficiary in the Upper West Region under the apprenticeship initiative.
Mr. Ziniel also highlighted progress in scholarship support, revealing that 13 out of 14 applicants from the municipality secured local scholarships last year after a joint assessment by the Scholarship Secretariat and the Assembly. He added that applications for GETFund scholarships have been submitted this year and are being followed up.
Despite these gains, he acknowledged the high demand for jobs, noting that even when opportunities are advertised, many applicants do not meet the required qualifications, while the number of job seekers far exceeds available opportunities.
He reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to expanding opportunities in line with government’s job creation and youth empowerment agenda.
