The Nandom Municipal Assembly is implementing a range of measures to address challenges in education, urban planning, and telecommunications in the municipality.
Municipal Chief Executive Anthony Ziniel, in an interview with KumasiMail, described inadequate teacher distribution as a major factor affecting education standards, noting that many schools across communities operate with only one or two teachers.
He explained that the proliferation of schools in communities such as Naapaal, Betaglo, Dabagteng and Brutu, without corresponding teacher deployment, has contributed to declining performance.
As a short-term solution, the Assembly is considering stakeholder consultations on merging some schools in nearby communities to ensure adequate staffing, while awaiting recruitment of additional teachers by the Ghana Education Service.
“We need a practical approach to ensure every child has access to quality teaching, even if it means temporary adjustments,” he said.
On spatial planning, the Assembly is intensifying enforcement of building regulations, particularly in areas such as Zongo where unregulated construction has blocked access routes. New measures include collaboration with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and Ghana Water Limited to ensure that only buildings with valid Assembly permits receive utility connections.
“This is already working. It is helping us enforce compliance without unnecessary conflict,” he noted.
Meanwhile, efforts to improve telecommunications are underway through collaboration with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC). Installation of infrastructure is expected to begin in six underserved communities, including Gegenkpe, the Ko area and the Nursing and Midwifery Training College enclave.
Mr. Ziniel said these interventions form part of a broader strategy to build a well-planned, connected, and functional municipality in line with national development priorities.
