Former Member of Parliament for Obuasi East, Edward Ennin, has confirmed his intention to contest for the Ashanti Regional Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when nominations are officially opened.
His confirmation follows a press conference held in Obuasi on Monday, April 28, 2026, by a group calling itself the “Rescue Ashanti NPP with Adansi Movement,” which publicly endorsed him for the position.
The group, representing six constituencies within the Adansi enclave, raised concerns about what it described as a decline in the NPP’s electoral performance in the Ashanti Region long considered a stronghold of the party. It cited recent election results showing losses in key constituencies, including Adansi Akrofuom, Adansi Asokwa, and New Edubiase, as evidence of weakening grassroots support.
They also pointed to the narrow retention of the Obuasi East parliamentary seat in the 2024 elections by just 19 votes as a sign of growing vulnerability in the region.
According to the group, the Adansi bloc remains a critical voting area capable of influencing the party’s fortunes, but its full potential has not been harnessed in recent years.
Endorsing the former Obusi East MP, the group described him as an experienced and capable leader with a proven track record. They highlighted his tenure as MP for the Obuasi Constituency from 2004 to 2012, and later for Obuasi East, noting that he played a key role in securing significant votes for the party during that period.
They further cited his strong ties with traditional authorities within the Asante Kingdom as an advantage that could help unify the party and rebuild grassroots support.
The group also expressed confidence that his leadership could reconnect the party with longstanding members and influential figures who have become less active since the era of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Mr. Ennin, in accepting the call, said his decision to contest is driven by the need to help reposition the party and restore its electoral dominance in the region.
The movement emphasized that its endorsement is aimed at promoting unity and renewal within the party, urging delegates and stakeholders to support what it described as a strategic move.
“The time to act is now,” the group stated, stressing that the future of the NPP in the Ashanti Region depends on decisive leadership and collective action.
So far three active members in the NPP have decleared their intention to contest for the position of regional Chairman they include Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, Henry Kwabena Kokofu and new entering Edward Ennin.
