Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has called for a comprehensive national response to drug abuse, describing the problem as a public health, social and development challenge that requires collective action beyond law enforcement.
Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at Ghana’s commemoration of the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day) on Monday, Mr. Debrah said drug abuse continues to endanger families, communities and the future of the country’s youth.
“Drug abuse is more than a security challenge. It is a public health, social and developmental issue that threatens families, communities and the potential of our young people,” he said.
He said the Government remained committed to intensifying efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking while expanding access to treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration services for people affected by substance abuse.
Mr. Debrah noted that the government’s strategy also places strong emphasis on prevention by creating opportunities for young people through education, skills development and employment.
“This administration remains focused on creating opportunities for young people through education, skills development and employment because prevention begins with hope, purpose and opportunity,” he said.
He urged young people to reject drug abuse and make choices that would safeguard their future.
“To every young Ghanaian: your future is priceless; protect it,” he advised.
The event, held under the theme, “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” brought together government officials, security agencies, civil society organisations, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, and young people.
Participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in addressing drug abuse and illicit trafficking through prevention, law enforcement, rehabilitation and sustained public education.
