Data bundle prices to drop after PURC tariff approval – Sam George reveals
Share on WhatsApp

The Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has approved the introduction of new telecom tariffs in the sector.

He emphasized that the implementation of these tariffs will lead to a significant reduction in data bundle prices across the telecom industry.

The Minister made these remarks during a press briefing on July 3, 2025, where he discussed the performance of the Ministry to date.

According to him, he was briefed on July 3, 2025, on the technical documentation and readiness to complete the necessary processes to introduce the new tariffs, which will provide value for money for consumers in terms of data offerings.

“We’ve had meetings. I had a meeting with the executive secretary of the PURC. It was very fruitful,” he said.

Mr. George explained that all three tower companies in the country which are Ghana Telecom, Helios, and ATC have presented the necessary technical documentation to support the new tariff structure.

He indicated that his ministry will attach a cover note and forward the documents to the PURC for the final processes.

“Today, this morning, I have just received, before coming in here, from the chairperson of the Chamber of Telecoms all the technical documentation that is needed to help the PURC,” he added.

He noted that once the telecom tariff is introduced, it will reduce by a certain factorial the cost of power and the cost buildup of telecoms, stressing that power is a major cost component for telecom companies since all cell sites run on electricity.

“And I’m confident that in Q3, we’ll be able to have some fruitful movement on the telecom tariff,” he assured.

The Minister further revealed that there are agreements with all the CEOs of the telecom companies to ensure that any drop in the telecom tariff will cascade down to customers through reduced data bundle prices. He added that if any company defaults in this agreement, the National Communications Authority (NCA) will enforce compliance.

He also touched on ongoing conversations with the Finance Ministry on possible tax handles that may be dropped to further ease the burden on consumers, stating that rationalisation of VAT calculations could have an automatic effect on the pricing of data.
