Dr. Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer, Acting CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), has urged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to acknowledge the achievements of President John Dramani Mahama and the Finance Minister for the recent appreciation of the cedi, instead of spreading propaganda.
Speaking on TV3’s NewDay monitored by Kumasimail, Dr. Computer explained that the cedi’s strong performance against the US dollar is real and not artificial.
He pointed out that the cedi’s gains are due to solid economic policies, not external factors like the US-China trade war.
He compared the cedi’s value to other major currencies in the region.
“If you look at the CFA in the francophone zone, one US dollar is about 586 CFA. In Kenya, the shilling is trading at 129.66 per dollar. In Nigeria, the naira is at 165.75 per dollar. Here in Ghana, the cedi is at 12.42 per dollar. How can you say the cedi’s rise is because of a trade war, when those other countries are not affected in the same way?” Dr. Computer said.
He called on the NPP to commend the President and the Finance Minister for their work.
“This is the time for them to praise President Mahama and his Finance Minister for this fantastic job. Arresting the decline of the cedi and making it appreciate to 15 cedis per dollar is not easy. It takes brilliant initiative,” he added.
Dr. Computer highlighted the government’s efforts to cut costs.
“When the President reduced the number of ministers from 126 to 56, people did not understand the impact. Now, at the Flagstaff House, only seven communicators are working under Felix Kwakye Ofosu. Under the NPP, there were 28 communicators and over a thousand people feeding on the consolidated fund. Cutting down government size has a real effect on the economy,” he explained.
Dr. computer also emphasized that the pressure on the cedi has eased.
“There is no heavy pressure on the cedi now. Ghanaians are seeing the results. At the fuel pumps, people are praising the President. I saw someone holding a gallon and saying he wants President Mahama to stay forever because he has never seen such relief. People are leaving positive testimonies”,he noted.
Dr. Computer concluded that more benefits are on the way for Ghanaians. “Very soon, people will enjoy even more goodies,” he said.
