The Eastern Regional Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Richard Etornam Nyarko, has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately reverse its decision requiring teacher recruitment applicants to purchase a GH¢25 voucher to check their application status.
According to Richard Nyarko, charging unemployed graduates who applied to serve the nation is unfair, especially when many of them may ultimately not be recruited.
“GES must stop and reverse the decision of voucher sale to applicants seeking to serve their nation. To collect money from an applicant only to be told he or she was not hired is a cruel slap in the face of an already troubled young man or woman,” he stated.
He further urged the Ghana Education Service to refund all applicants who have already purchased the vouchers, expressing confidence that the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, would intervene to address the matter.
“We are Social Democrats, and government policies must reflect fairness, compassion and social justice,” he added.
The call comes after the Ghana Education Service announced that applicants who applied for recruitment into the Service can begin checking the status of their applications through the official recruitment portal. To access their status, applicants are required to purchase a GH¢25 voucher.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations of GES, Daniel Fenyi, the Service indicated that application statuses would be released in two phases. Applicants to the pre-secondary sector, comprising Early Childhood Education and Primary Schools, were scheduled to access their status from 5:00 p.m., while applicants to the secondary sector, including Junior High Schools (JHS) and Senior High Schools (SHS), were scheduled to check their status from 9:00 p.m.
More than 40,000 applicants submitted applications through the teacher recruitment portal for only 7,000 available vacancies.
The Ministry of Education has assured applicants that recruitment would be based on merit, with the best-qualified candidates selected from the large pool of applicants.
