Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo Esq, has openly welcomed indications that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) may reintroduce Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2028 elections, questioning the viability of such a move given the current administration’s policy successes.
Speaking on TV3’s NewDay program monitored by Kumasimail, Tameklo seized the opportunity to highlight President John Mahama’s economic achievements, including the abolition of the controversial electronic transaction levy (e-levy) and betting tax, while challenging the NPP’s potential campaign narrative.
He emphasized “I am happy that the NPP is preparing to bring Bawumia back. What new message will he bring?” Tameklo quipped.
“That as chair of the Economic Management Team, they introduced the e-levy, a clear misstep. President Mahama has abolished the e-levy, abolished the betting tax, and stabilized the economy. What will Bawumia campaign on next?”
Tameklo further praised the 2025 budget’s role in currency stabilization, noting the cedi, which many feared would spiral uncontrollably, has achieved relative stability under Mahama’s leadership.
He credited ongoing engagements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), including Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s recent Washington discussions, for reinforcing economic confidence.
He said “I was afraid the cedi would once again charge like a bull in a china shop, but look at the relative stability.
“We have engaged IMF officials – the Honorable Ato Forson has been in Washington – and the report looks fantastic. That is how you govern: no arrogance, respect for people. Proceed with that target”, he added.
