A devastating explosion at a mining explosives shop in Odumase, near Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality, has claimed three lives and left several others injured, including firefighters.

The blast, which occurred on Wednesday evening, was triggered by a tender lighting during the evening rains in one of the shops selling dynamites and other explosives used by local miners.

The powerful explosion ripped through nearby buildings, causing extensive damage and injuries to multiple people.
According to eyewitness account, authorities have confirmed the death of a resident who was trying to warn firefighters about the imminent danger at the spot while two others died in the hospital.

Divisional Officer Grade 2 Joe Bryden, the Asante Akyem Central Municipal Fire Commander, recounted the tragic incident “He was trying to warn the firefighters to back off, but before he could escape, the explosion occurred. He was severely injured, and I’ve been told he has passed.”

Firefighters deployed to contain the inferno also sustained injuries, while some victims reportedly had body parts dismembered. The explosion happened just a few meters from a fuel station, raising further safety concerns in the area.

Authorities are still assessing the full extent of casualties and damage as investigations continue.
