A fire outbreak at Odawna, opposite the Adabraka Market in Accra, has destroyed several structures as emergency response efforts were delayed by severe flooding in the area.
The fire started on Monday morning, 29 June 2026, as torrential rains continued across the capital, leaving roads and nearby communities flooded. The cause of the blaze remains unknown.
Residents watched helplessly as flames spread through the flooded community, with access to the area made difficult by rising water levels.
The Assembly Member for the area, Hendrick Noble Kinnkah, said the flooding had affected efforts to quickly reach the scene.
“Access to the area is a problem because the place is filled with water. However, they have been able to reach the area, and we are hoping that they will quench the fire. A lot of people are stuck in the water,” he said.
The incident has increased concerns among residents, many of whom were already dealing with the impact of flooding caused by heavy rainfall since Sunday night.
Several parts of Accra have been affected by the downpour, with roads submerged, traffic disrupted and commuters stranded during the morning rush hour.
Flooding has been reported along sections of the N1 Highway, Apenkwa towards Tesano, the Accra-Kasoa Highway, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Atomic Junction in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution as emergency teams respond to the combined challenges of flooding and the fire outbreak.
Residents in affected areas are calling for urgent assistance, warning that delays in response could increase damage to property and put more lives at risk.
