About 15,000 residents of Kunfusi and surrounding communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region have reportedly been cut off from the rest of the region after severe flooding caused the collapse of the Kunfusi Dam.
The collapse followed about 15 hours of continuous rainfall between September 23 and 24, 2026, leaving major roads in the area impassable and disrupting the movement of people, food and essential supplies.
The Chief of Kunfusi, Kunfusiwura Saaka Awusi, who confirmed the situation in an interview with Bole-based Nkilgi FM, said the condition of the roads had deteriorated to the point where vehicles could no longer access the community.
“Our road has ceased to be motorable, leaving about 15,000 people cut off from the rest of the Savannah Region,” the Chief said.
The flooding has also affected several sections of the Tuna-Kalba road, further worsening transportation difficulties and isolating communities in the area.
The development has sparked concern among residents because Kunfusi and adjoining communities are major food-producing areas in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District.
With access roads cut off, residents fear the disruption could affect the movement of farm produce and essential commodities, while also making it difficult for people to access critical services outside the affected communities.
Kunfusiwura Saaka Awusi has appealed to the government and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene to restore access to the affected communities.
He also called for a lasting solution to the recurring flooding and road problems, saying the annual disruption was particularly worrying given the area’s contribution to food production in the district.
Residents are consequently calling for urgent assistance to reopen the affected roads and restore safe movement between Kunfusi and neighbouring communities, while authorities work to address the causes of the perennial flooding.
