A former Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Kwasi Mensah Duku (Rtd.), has died at Police Hospital in Accra on Tuesday 8th September 2026, leaving behind a distinguished career in the Ghana Police Service and a legacy of dedicated public service.
COP Duku, affectionately known by family members as “Kwasi Broni,” served as a Regional Police Commander in the Ashanti, Western and Upper West regions at various times during his career.
News of his death was shared by a relative, who described the retired senior police officer as an esteemed cousin, brother and son whose contribution to the family and the country would be deeply remembered.
According to the family member Kwame Asare Boadu, COP Duku was the son of the late Paul Duku, also known as Opanin Kwabena Nsiah, who was the direct uncle of the relative who announced his passing.
Remembered for dedicated service
COP Duku was described by his family as a brilliant police officer who served the nation dutifully and maintained a reputation for professionalism throughout his career.
His service in regional command positions placed him among senior officers entrusted with overseeing policing operations and maintaining law and order in some of Ghana’s regions.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, the retired officer was also regarded as an important figure within his family and a source of support to relatives.
His relative recalled visiting him during his illness at the University of Ghana Medical Centre and subsequently at the Police Hospital in Accra.
During those visits, the family member said he witnessed the pain COP Duku was experiencing but also saw his determination to recover.
“Yet, he remained determined to survive,” the relative recalled.
Despite the efforts and his determination, COP Duku has passed away, with his family accepting his death as an act of God.
A career of public service
As a former regional police commander, COP Duku served at a senior level of the Ghana Police Service at a time when regional commands played a crucial role in coordinating policing activities, crime prevention and public safety.
His postings to the Ashanti, Western and Upper West regions reflected a career that took him across different parts of the country and entrusted him with significant responsibilities within the Service.
Family members and those who knew him are expected to remember him not only for his professional achievements but also for his role as a family man and a respected relative.
