Former Ghanaian Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been officially placed on INTERPOL’s Red Notice list following a renewed request from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
This development marks a critical step in the ongoing investigations into alleged corruption involving the ex-minister.
The Red Notice, published today, provides detailed identification of Ofori-Atta, describing him as a 65-year-old male, born on November 7, 1959, in Accra. He is noted to be 1.7 meters tall, with black hair and eyes, and fluent in both English and Twi.
INTERPOL has indicated that he is wanted on charges of “Using Public Office for Profit.”
The OSP believes Ofori-Atta is currently in the United States undergoing medical treatment and is seeking assistance from international law enforcement agencies to locate and provisionally detain him pending extradition or voluntary surrender.
This is the second time the former minister has been declared wanted by Ghana’s anti-corruption authorities.
In February 2025, the OSP labeled him a “fugitive from justice” after he failed to appear before investigators despite multiple summons.
The investigations relate to several high-profile cases, including the controversial National Cathedral project and a revenue assurance contract involving Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML).
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on June 2, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng revealed that the process to request the INTERPOL Red Notice was initiated just 30 minutes prior to the announcement.
“I have set in motion the procedures for the issuance of an INTERPOL Red Notice to locate and provisionally arrest Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta in any jurisdiction, pending his extradition or voluntary surrender,” Mr. Agyebeng said.
INTERPOL’s Red Notice serves as an international alert to law enforcement agencies to locate and provisionally arrest individuals wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence. It is important to note that a Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant but a request for cooperation
