Former Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) CEO, Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, has attributed his ‘unexpected’ removal from office to pressure exerted by National Democratic Congress (NDC) foot soldiers.
Prof. Addai-Mensah was appointed CEO of KATH in November 2022 by the Akufo-Addo administration, with a fixed-term contract of four years.
However, after serving just five months under the subsequent John Dramani Mahama- Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang government, he was relieved of his duties.
In an interview with Kumasi’s Angel FM, Prof. Addai-Mensah hinted at political interference but declined to disclose details of private discussions with government officials.
When asked if he believed public pressure led to his removal, he responded, “I think so. I have told you there are some conversations that if I sit here and talk about, it would be unwise… If you had a conversation with an elder and then make it public, it means you were not well nurtured, so I’ll end here.”
He expressed his conviction that relentless pressure from NDC grassroots supporters influenced the leadership of both the government and the party to make the decision to remove him.
Prof Addai Mensah disclosed, “But I am convinced that it was the pressure from the foot soldiers mounted on the leadership of the government and the party that made me leave the office.”
Media reports indicate that Prof. Addai-Mensah’s dismissal followed a meeting with the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Friday, May 2, 2025. Sources describe the meeting as cordial, with the minister commending Prof. Addai-Mensah for his significant contributions to KATH and the health sector at large.
Days later, on May 6, 2025, the former CEO took to his official Facebook page to announce his departure, writing: “Rubicon has been crossed. The dice is cast. The end of an era has come. A new era begins tomorrow at KNUST. I owe my King, the Asantehene, eternal gratitude; ex-President Akufo-Addo for finding me worthy of the position; Francis Asenso Boakye for the mention when it mattered most; Asanteman and Ghana for the love and support; and of course, President John Dramani Mahama for the opportunity to serve five months in his administration. I’m born to serve. The Horns of the Altar!!!”
