The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), Mr. Michael Okyere Baafi, has led a management delegation to inspect the Melcom warehouse at the Tema Export Processing Zone (EPZ) following a recent fire outbreak that damaged the facility.
The visit, which took place on Saturday, July 5, was aimed at assessing the extent of the damage, expressing the Authority’s support to Melcom, and engaging key stakeholders on measures to strengthen fire safety within the Tema EPZ.
During the inspection, the GFZA Chief Executive interacted with a representative of Melcom, Mr. Govind, and the Tema Regional Fire Officer, who briefed the delegation on the circumstances surrounding the incident and the emergency response undertaken by the Ghana National Fire Service.
Speaking during the visit, Mr. Baafi reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to ensuring the safety, security, and resilience of businesses operating within Ghana’s Free Zones enclaves. He emphasized that protecting investments and maintaining business continuity remain central to the Authority’s mandate.
He announced that the GFZA would continue to work closely with the Ghana National Fire Service to strengthen emergency preparedness and improve response times to fire incidents within the Tema Export Processing Zone.
According to him, enhancing fire response capabilities is essential to safeguarding lives, protecting property, and sustaining investor confidence in the Free Zones programme.
Mr. Baafi also disclosed that the Ghana Free Zones Authority, in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service, has commenced investigations into the cause of the fire to establish its origin and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He reiterated the Authority’s commitment to collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to strengthen safety standards and maintain a secure operating environment for investors and businesses across the Free Zones enclaves.
The GFZA Chief Executive was accompanied on the visit by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Public Relations and Aftercare, Dr. Patience Agbleze Acorlor; the Director of the Tema Office, Mr. Edward Adu-Ntiamoah; the Head of Estate and Zones, Mr. Benjamin Obeng; and other officials of the Authority.
