Thousands of sports enthusiasts gathered today to witness the unveiling of the newly constructed Tarkwa and Abosso (TnA) Sports Stadium in the Tarkwa Nsuaem municipality.
The state-of-the-art stadium, built by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation with funding from Gold Fields Ghana’s Tarkwa and Damang mines, has significantly impressed attendees with its modern facilities.
The stadium is set to become the home ground of the 2021-2022 Ghana Premier League champions, Medeama SC. The transformation of the TnA Stadium began in January 2020 and was completed in June 2023 at a cost of US$16.2 million.
This substantial investment has upgraded the facility from a modest 400-seater football park to an 8,000-plus seater world-class stadium, fully equipped to host international matches.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Elliot Twum, Vice President and Interim Managing Director of Gold Fields Ghana Limited, highlighted that this initiative is a testament to the Foundation’s commitment to the socio-economic development of its host communities, showcasing the positive impact of responsible mining. He also emphasized that the facility meets all international standards, as certified by FIFA.
The Minister of Sports, Mustapha Ussif, lauded the project as a prime example of partnership and collaboration in driving community development. He noted that the stadium would serve as a crucial platform for nurturing local talent.
The Minister also expressed the government’s gratitude to Gold Fields and stressed the importance of prioritizing the maintenance of the facility.
George Mireku Duker, the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem, echoed these sentiments, stating that the reconstruction of the TnA Sports Stadium exemplifies the powerful impact of corporate social responsibility. He believes the stadium will significantly boost sports development in the Tarkwa area.
Duker also urged the National Sports Authority and the municipal assembly to collaborate on a strategy for the effective management of the facility.
To mark the commissioning, a ceremonial match was held between the staff of Gold Fields Ghana and the Professional Footballers Association, followed by an evening match between Medeama SC and Asante Kotoko Football Club.
