The government has stepped up efforts to revive two major but long-stalled market projects in Kumasi, with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, leading an inspection of the Kejetia Market Phase II (Central Market) and Krofrom Market sites.
The inspection on Sunday, August 30, 2026, focused on identifying the obstacles that have delayed the projects and determining practical steps needed to resume construction and bring the facilities to completion.
Ayariga was joined by the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang; the Apagyahene, Oheneba Owusu Afriyie IV; and heads of departments at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).
The renewed attention on the projects comes after years of construction delays that have left two important commercial facilities incomplete.
The Kejetia Market Phase II project, which began more than seven years ago, has been stalled for over three years despite reaching about 70 per cent completion. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, cut sod for the project.
The situation is even more prolonged at the Krofrom Market project, which was initiated in 2007 to provide a modern trading facility and expand commercial space in Kumasi.
However, irregular funding has repeatedly disrupted construction, leaving the project incomplete for more than a decade. The delay has affected traders and residents, while the deteriorating condition of the unfinished facility has raised further concerns. Many traders have also been forced to operate from temporary structures.
There are, however, indications of renewed efforts to secure funding for the Krofrom Market project.
In May 2026, the KMA announced that GH¢100 million had been secured from the government through the Social Investment Fund to support the project’s completion. The market is estimated to require GH¢179 million to complete.
The inspection is expected to help the Ministry and the KMA establish the remaining challenges and agree on measures needed to move the two projects forward.
The completion of the Kejetia Market Phase II and Krofrom Market is expected to improve trading conditions, expand commercial space and support economic activity and livelihoods across the Kumasi metropolis.
