The Ministry of Finance has approved the payment of all outstanding arrears owed to staff of the Judicial Service and Members of the Lower Court Bench, in a major move to end the indefinite strike by JUSAG.
In a statement signed by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Ministry said approval has been granted for the payment of the arrears in two tranches.
According to the schedule, five months’ arrears, covering January to May 2026, will be paid in November 2026, while the remaining five months, covering June to October 2026, will be paid in December 2026.
The approval follows earlier letters from the Ministry, referenced PFM-CD/CPMU//JUSAG/CoS/26/10 and PFM-CD/CPMU//LCB/CoS/26/10, dated October 28, 2026, on the review of salaries and allowances for the Judicial Service staff and Members of the Lower Court Bench.
The Ministry recalled that pursuant to Article 149 of the 1992 Constitution, President John Dramani Mahama granted approval for the implementation of new conditions of service for staff of the Judicial Service and Members of the Lower Court Bench, with effect from January 1, 2026.
“In line with Government’s resolve not to accrue arrears, approval is hereby granted for the payment of the associated arrears per the schedule below,” the statement said.
The Ministry has directed the relevant authorities to give effect to the approval.
The move comes on the first day of the indefinite strike declared by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana, JUSAG, over the non-implementation of its conditions of service.
JUSAG has insisted that the strike will only be called off when there is full compliance with C.I. 141, which governs its conditions of service.
It remains unclear whether JUSAG will accept the government’s payment schedule and suspend the strike.
