Former Member of Parliament for Nhyeaso, Kennedy Kankam, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to review the operational status of the opposition New Patriotic Party over what he describes as a breach of constitutional requirements governing political parties.
Speaking in an interview on Fakye TV in Kumasi, Mr Kankam alleged that the NPP does not have a permanent regional office in the Ashanti Region, despite the region being regarded as the party’s political stronghold.
According to him, the Constitutional Instrument (CI) regulating political parties in Ghana requires every registered political party to maintain functional regional offices across all regions of the country.
He argued that the absence of a permanent regional office in the Ashanti Region constitutes a violation of the conditions under which political parties are permitted to operate.
“The Electoral Commission has every right to withdraw the licence of the NPP if the party has failed to meet the legal requirements,” he said.
The former Ashanti regional Organizer further questioned why a party that has governed Ghana for several terms had not secured a permanent regional office in one of its most dominant support bases.
The Electoral Commission has not publicly responded to the claims.
Under Ghana’s political party regulations, registered parties are expected to maintain a national character and establish offices across the country as part of requirements for registration and continued operation.
