A group of lecturers from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), along with other academics in the Ashanti Region, has publicly endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
The group urged Ghanaians to vote for the NDC’s Presidential candidate John Mahama, citing concerns over the current administration’s handling of national and educational issues.
Speaking at a press briefing in Kumasi, the lecturers criticized the ruling government, accusing it of mismanaging the nation’s affairs and causing a decline in the quality of the educational sector.
Professor Nathaniel Bosom, representing the group, expressed their dissatisfaction with the current state of governance, highlighting the struggles professionals and academics face under the present administration.
“The issues confronting this country are affecting everyone, including us in academia. We are deeply concerned about the direction in which this government has led us over the past few years. Our livelihoods and the quality of education are deteriorating, and we believe it is time to support former President John Mahama to help restore our country,” Professor Bosom stated.
The group emphasized that they are advocating for responsible leadership and a sustainable approach to policies. Addressing questions about Mahama’s educational policies, particularly the feasibility of making tertiary education more affordable, they expressed confidence that these plans are achievable if properly executed.
When asked how the NDC would implement policies to make education accessible, one spokesperson highlighted the need for efficient use of resources. “If Free Senior High School (SHS) was achievable, why not a more accessible tertiary education system? The focus should be on managing resources effectively to enhance education quality while ensuring affordability,” he remarked.
The lecturers acknowledged the hesitation some academics may have about openly supporting political causes, but they affirmed their conviction that the country’s future needs urgent intervention.
“We know people may fear the repercussions of openly endorsing a party, but we believe this is a critical moment. Ghana needs change, and we urge all who share this vision to vote accordingly,” they concluded.
This endorsement reflects the growing discourse on educational reforms and fiscal responsibility as central themes in the upcoming elections, as various groups call for a change in leadership.
After addressing the media, the group proceeded with a street campaign from KNUST campus through Tech Junction, Bomso, Top High, Oforikrom, and ended at the Anloga Junction.
They used the opportunity to educate voters on how to vote and where to locate the NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, on the ballot paper.
