A suit has been filed by Isaac Mensah, a stores superintendent at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), challenging the recent extension of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mrs. Akosua Dickson’s tenure.
Mensah, who has been with the university for 26 years, is urging the court to nullify the decision on grounds of “illegality and procedural impropriety”.
He asserts that the governing council’s actions are unlawful and should not be allowed to stand.
Permitting the extension would “undermine the statutes governing the university and deny other qualified individuals the opportunity to be considered for the Vice-Chancellor position,” Mensah stresses.
The suit notes the urgency of the situation, as the governing council plans to allow the VC to assume office on August 1, 2024.
This development comes after an alumni filed a similar suit challenging the reappointment of the vice-chancellor a fortnight ago, scheduled to be heard on July 30.
The legal challenges cast a shadow over the university’s leadership, with concerns about the legitimacy of the vice-chancellor’s extended tenure.
