KNUST VC Agyare backs plan 2K35, Infrastructure expansion
Share on WhatsApp

The Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Christian Agyare, has outlined an ambitious infrastructure and governance agenda, pledging to expand and modernize the university’s physical and digital systems while embedding accountability across the institution.

He said at his investiture ceremony in Kumasi that his administration would prioritize facilities to enhance teaching, research, examinations, sports and recreation, and would fully implement the university’s Plan 2K35 as a working guide for decision-making and development.

Prof. Agyare said the strategic plan must be lived out by the entire university community, not merely filed away.

“We will collectively embrace and own the university’s strategic plan, that is Plan 2K35, ensuring that it is not just a document on our shelves, but a living guide that shapes our decisions, actions, and aspirations”.

He said the university would build a culture in which every member of staff and student sees themselves as part of a shared mission.

“All individuals must see themselves as contributors to the achievement of our common goals,” he stated. “We will also embed a tenure culture of performance and accountability.”

According to him, accountability must be understood as a tool for improvement, not punishment.

“Accountability is not a punishment. It is a pathway to continuous improvement,” he expressed. “When our structures are agile, our people are empowered, and our purpose is set, KNUST will not only respond to change, it will define it.”

Prof. Agyare said the university would also invest in the welfare of students, staff and their families, adding that strong institutions are built on the well-being of their people.

He said KNUST’s collegiate system, which he described as central to the university’s structure, would be strengthened through decentralization, performance appraisal, transparency and accountability measures.

“Under my leadership, we will revitalize this system through thoughtful decentralization,” he stressed. “This will empower our colleges to respond more effectively to today’s challenges, whilst maintaining institutional coherence, high standards, and strategic alignment.”

The Vice-Chancellor said sustainability would shape the university’s development agenda, including academic programmes, construction projects and campus energy use.

“Sustainability at KNUST will not be a peripheral conversation. It will be woven into the fabric of everything that we do,” he noted.

He added that the modernization drive would ensure inclusivity and better access for persons with disabilities.

“Modernization and expansion of our physical and digital assets is paramount,” he emphasized. “This will be achieved by equipping our facilities to support world-class teaching, research, examinations, sports, and recreation in a fully inclusive manner.”

Prof. Agyare said he was committed to completing ongoing projects and beginning new ones.

“I commit to bringing ongoing infrastructure works to fruition, whilst simultaneously launching new facilities,” he said. “A sustainable KNUST is not merely an environmental aspiration, but a legacy we owe to every generation that comes after us.”
