The newly inducted Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has pledged to steer the university toward global excellence through a bold four-year strategic agenda focused on research, innovation, teaching and institutional transformation.
At his induction ceremony attended by Chancellor Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, representatives of President John Dramani Mahama, government officials, members of the academic community and traditional leaders, the Vice-Chancellor said his administration would work to consolidate KNUST’s standing as a leading centre of excellence in Africa and beyond.
“I would like to outline a few key priorities I believe will be central to the realization of the KNUST vision over the next four years,” he said.
“My vision is to deepen KNUST’s status as a globally recognized centre of excellence for students, staff and alumni, to collaborate in the spirit of innovation, entrepreneurship and inventiveness to support the industrial and socioeconomic development of Ghana and beyond,” he expressed.
Prof Agyare said the university’s long-term direction would be anchored on a mission to pursue eminence in research, innovation, teaching and institutional stewardship through adaptive governance, sustainable resource management, strategic partnerships, inclusivity and technology-driven transformation.
According to him, KNUST must position itself as a forward-looking institution that can harness its intellectual capital, alumni network and strategic partnerships to deliver impactful research and transformative teaching.
“The collective goal is to position KNUST as a forward-looking institution of higher learning that harnesses its intellectual capital, alumni network, and strategic partnerships to drive impactful research, innovation, and transformative teaching,” he emphasized.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that his administration would implement seven strategic thematic areas to guide the university’s journey from excellence to eminence.
Central to the plan, he said, would be the pursuit of transformative education built on what he described as an organisational mindset for the future.
“Transformative education begins not with the changing curricula alone, but with a changing mindset,” he stated noting “This is not simply a strategic objective, but a culture that must permeate every college, faculty, department, unit, staff, students, stakeholders, and every corridor of this university.”
He stressed that innovation must become part of the university’s culture rather than an occasional achievement, adding that the institution would introduce recognition and reward systems to celebrate creative thinking, bold ideas and transformational leadership across all levels.
“We must cultivate a culture where innovation is not the exception, but the expectation,” he firmly stated.
The Vice-Chancellor also outlined plans to broaden access to KNUST’s high-demand programmes and create a more diverse student body, saying the move would help the institution remain relevant and responsive to national development needs.
“We must also broaden the horizons of opportunity by expanding access to our high-demand programs and fostering a more diverse student body,” he said. “In doing so, we will ensure that KNUST remains relevant, responsive, and accessible to talented and deserving students from all backgrounds,” Prof Agyare noted.
He said the university’s future depended on collective commitment from all stakeholders, adding that the transformation agenda would begin immediately.
“The KNUST dream is not a distant aspiration, but a collective commitment. And it begins today,” he said.
