The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, has assured motorists and residents that adequate measures are being taken to ensure safety and timely completion of the ongoing dualisation of the Asokwa Interchange to Ahodwo Roundabout road.
Speaking to the media during an inspection tour of the project on Tuesday, the Mayor urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching the construction area to avoid accidents and ensure the safety of both road users and workers.
“Once you are driving and you approach a construction site, you have to be cautious, protect yourself and protect other users of the road so that we don’t have casualties on site,” he said.
Mr. Boadi explained that the contractor had already commenced work and had been given a strict timeline to complete the project.
According to him, steps have been taken to remove all impediments that could delay construction, including engaging individuals carrying out activities along the stretch of the road.
He noted that while some occupants are expected to vacate the area by January 2, others will leave by January 4, stressing that the move is to ensure the contractor works smoothly and completes the project on schedule.
“The intention is that we don’t want the contractor to have any impediments whatsoever so that he can go according to schedule and have the project completed on time,” the Mayor stated.
Calling for public support, Mr. Boadi said the road project responds to long-standing concerns from residents about poor road infrastructure in Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city.
“For a very long time, people in Kumasi have complained that when you go to Accra, you see new roads and construction, while Kumasi has been left behind. This government has heeded that call,” he said, adding that the project is aimed at opening up the city and positioning it as a major commercial hub.
He appealed to residents of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to cooperate fully with authorities and contractors to ensure the successful execution of the project.
The Mayor further explained that the section of the road from the Ahodwo Roundabout towards the Asokwa end is being funded by the Government of Ghana, while the stretch from the Ahodwo Roundabout to the Santasi Roundabout will be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The project, according to him, is expected to be completed within six months, with a maximum duration of eight months.
The dualisation of the Asokwa Interchange–Ahodwo Roundabout road forms part of broader efforts to improve road infrastructure and ease traffic congestion within the Kumasi metropolis.
