The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang, has officially launched the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF) 2.0 in the city, inviting young people between the ages of 15 and 24 to submit innovative climate action project proposals for funding.
Announcing the call on Wednesday, the mayor said Kumasi’s selection for the third consecutive time to participate in the global initiative reflects the city’s commitment to advancing climate action while empowering young people to lead local environmental solutions.
The Youth Climate Action Fund, announced by Bloomberg Philanthropies during the COP28 UAE Local Climate Action Summit in December 2023, is designed to provide technical assistance and financial support to young people as co-designers, co-producers and co-governors of climate solutions within their communities.
According to the mayor, Kumasi is among 300 cities worldwide selected to participate in the expanded 2026–2027 programme, which seeks to strengthen youth participation in addressing climate change through locally driven initiatives.
Under the programme, participating cities will establish microgrant schemes to support youth-led climate projects that align with their local climate action priorities.
In Kumasi, selected youth groups will receive grants ranging from US$1,000 to US$5,000 to implement projects that promote sustainable development and address environmental challenges within the metropolis.
Mayor Ofori Agyemang explained that project proposals would be reviewed by a mayoral advisory committee, which will select the most promising initiatives for funding. A separate Project Implementation Committee will monitor the execution of successful projects to ensure compliance with approved timelines and the appropriate use of funds.
He announced that applications officially opened on July 15, 2026, and urged eligible youth groups resident in Kumasi to download application forms free of charge from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s website.
The mayor said the application portal provides detailed information on eligibility requirements, submission guidelines and other relevant information.
Completed application forms may be submitted electronically via [email protected] or delivered by hand to the Development Planning Unit of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly no later than August 24, 2026.
The Youth Climate Action Fund initially provides participating city administrations with US$50,000 to support youth-led projects that contribute to their climate action strategies, with the broader goal of mobilising thousands of young people worldwide to drive community-based climate solutions .
