The Ashanti Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service has destroyed illicit drugs valued at several million Ghana cedis following sustained operations across the region.
The narcotics, which included tramadol, cannabis, male enhancement products and other prohibited substances, were seized during police operations conducted between 2025 and 2026. The destruction was carried out after the unit secured a court order in line with Section 37 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).
Speaking after the exercise, the Commanding Officer of the Unit, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Frazer Nutakor, said the substances were destroyed to prevent them from re-entering circulation and to demonstrate the police service’s commitment to fighting drug abuse and trafficking.
He explained that the drugs were burned at the Oti Landfill site in the presence of representatives from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Environmental Health Services, and the media to ensure transparency and accountability.
ASP Nutakor disclosed that suspects arrested in connection with the seized narcotics are currently before the courts and are being prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He cautioned the public against drug abuse, noting that many people misuse drugs in the mistaken belief that they enhance productivity or improve academic performance, without realising the serious health risks involved.
Reaffirming the unit’s resolve, ASP Nutakor said officers would remain relentless in arresting and prosecuting individuals involved in the illicit drug trade to rid society of the menace.
He urged the public to refrain from drug use, stressing that drug abuse poses a serious threat to public health and national security.
