Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, a presidential hopeful in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has voiced disbelief over the former Akufo-Addo administration’s use of public funds to buy past questions for senior high school (SHS) students.
Speaking on Kessben FM, the long-time NPP figure questioned the policy’s merit, stressing that students should source their own practice materials.
“The issue of using Ghana’s money to buy past papers during our time I wasn’t part of government, but I couldn’t even believe it,” Agyapong said.
“Why past questions? In our time, you needed to find your own past questions for practice. Government taking state resources to buy past questions and distribute them to students, what kind of thing is that?”
The criticism references revelations from the previous NPP administration, which procured past West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) questions for free SHS beneficiaries, a move decried as wasteful amid economic woes.
Agyapong urged NPP members to speak out against party mistakes for the national good, rather than prioritizing loyalty.
“A lot of mistakes were made in the past. In Ghana, what hurts is that because of political expediency, if NPP is doing something and you are an NPP member, don’t say it,” he stated.
“There are certain red lines you should not cross because you have to be loyal to your tradition, but there are some issues you say publicly that doesn’t mean you are not a patriot.”
He recalled a 2022 warning from the same Kessben FM studio as the economy spiraled.
“I pleaded with the President to listen to me, forget about the past, and trust me all the 2015 matters are unnecessary,” Agyapong said.
“I came to your office in 1997 on Kwadwo Thompson Road and told you{Akuffo Addo} that you could be President. So if I’m telling you something, listen.
“Those running the economy they will disgrace you. Today, have you seen what has happened?”, he stressed.
