The Minority in Parliament has rejected the government’s explanation that recent power outages are the result of system upgrades and a fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) facility in Akosombo.
In a media briefing, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, attributed the outages to ongoing technical upgrades and a recent fire incident that disrupted operations.
According to him, the situation has led to load shedding of more than 700 megawatts after six generation units were affected.
He further explained that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is currently undertaking transformer replacements as part of efforts to upgrade the country’s electricity distribution network.
However, the Minority has dismissed these explanations, describing them as inadequate.
In a rebuttal, former Deputy Energy Minister, Collins Adomako-Mensah, accused the John Dramani Mahama administration of neglecting the energy sector.
He argued that the current challenges stem from the government’s failure to invest in critical infrastructure over the past 14 months.
Adomako-Mensah also cautioned against blaming ECG staff for the crisis, urging the government to take responsibility for addressing the situation.
The ongoing power outages have sparked public concern, with calls for swift and sustainable solutions to stabilize electricity supply across the country.
