Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 campaign, has defended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent statements during his thank you tour, insisting they are consistent with positions he held while in government.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Aboagye stated, “You and I were at UPSA on February 7, 2024, when the President and all cabinet members were present, and Dr. Bawumia outlined the measures he would take if elected president.
“Everything he’s saying now, including his stance on the E-Levy and his promise to cancel it, was already made clear while he was Vice President. There is nothing new in his current statements that he did not express while in office”, he told Evans Mensah.
On the issue of “arrogance of power,” Aboagye acknowledged that such tendencies can emerge in large organizations.
He noted “When you appoint close to 8,000 people, you should expect these things to happen. The key is to continually remind your team that they are there to serve and must remain humble.
“Dr. Bawumia has consistently addressed this both in office and on the campaign trail”, he stated.
When asked by host Evans Mensah whether Dr. Bawumia accepts responsibility for any shortcomings.
Aboagye responded, “That is why you hear him use the pronoun ‘we’ in all his statements. He admits that lessons have been learned, and these experiences will guide the team to improve. It is a mark of leadership to openly acknowledge and learn from past mistakes.”
Addressing criticism about Bawumia’s actions during challenging times in government, Aboagye explained, “Unless you were not following, you would know that Dr. Bawumia consistently addressed these issues during his tenure.
He added “For example, regarding the E-Levy, he holds his own position but was part of a collective decision-making process in the cabinet. While he may have disagreed, government decisions are ultimately collective, not individual”.
