MTN Ghana has fulfilled its pledge to provide GH¢2.5 million worth of relief items to people affected by the devastating floods that swept through parts of the country on June 29, 2026.
The telecommunications giant has presented 1,400 relief boxes and 1,400 mattresses to families whose lives were disrupted by the disaster. The boxes contain essential food items, detergents, and blankets, offering immediate support to those who lost personal belongings and household essentials to the raging waters.
The items have been handed over to the Office of the President and received on behalf of the government by the Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, and the Presidential Adviser and Special Aide to President John Dramani Mahama.
The pledge came shortly after the disaster, as the scale of destruction in Accra became painfully clear. Homes and businesses were submerged, leaving thousands of people facing the overwhelming task of rebuilding their lives.
But the flooding was not confined to the capital. Communities in other parts of the country, including the Central Region, also suffered significant damage from floods in the days leading up to and around the June 29 disaster.
For many of those affected, the loss went far beyond damaged buildings. Furniture, bedding, clothing, food, and other basic household possessions were swept away or destroyed, leaving families to depend on support from government, civil society organisations, businesses, and individual well-wishers.
From promise to delivery
When MTN Ghana announced the relief package, Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett expressed the company’s solidarity with affected families, noting that the devastation had robbed many people not just of their homes, but also of their belongings and sense of normalcy. He said MTN wanted the intervention to serve as a reminder that affected families were not alone as they began piecing their lives back together.
The company has now delivered on its commitment. The 1,400 mattresses are expected to provide basic sleeping arrangements for affected households, while the relief boxes will help families meet some of their most urgent food and household needs.
Leading the MTN Ghana delegation at the presentation was Nana Kofi Asare, General Manager for Legal and Regulatory Affairs. He was accompanied by Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, Acting General Manager for Sustainability and Shared Value; Robert Kuzoe, Senior Manager of the MTN Foundation; Afua Falconer, Acting Senior Manager for Communications; Rhoderlyn Entsua-Mensah, Manager for Sustainability; and Angela Adu Ampofo, Manager for Regulatory Affairs. Also in attendance was Nanabanyin Brown-Addo, Head of Joy Business and Coordinator for the Multimedia Group’s flood relief support campaign.
Government expresses gratitude, pledges accountability
Receiving the items on behalf of the government, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo expressed profound appreciation to MTN Ghana for its timely intervention.
“On behalf of the President and the people of Ghana, I extend our deepest gratitude to MTN Ghana for this generous contribution,” she said. “In times like these, the support of corporate Ghana is not just welcome – it is essential. MTN has demonstrated that it is a true partner in national development and in the welfare of our citizens.”
She assured the public that the relief items would reach the intended beneficiaries, emphasising the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the distribution process.
In a move that underscored the spirit of collaboration, the Deputy Chief of Staff indicated that MTN Ghana is welcomed to be part of the distribution exercise.
Corporate citizenship in action
The gesture forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader corporate social responsibility efforts, delivered through the MTN Foundation, and reflects the company’s commitment to standing with communities during times of crisis.
With the presentation of the 1,400 relief boxes and 1,400 mattresses, MTN Ghana has turned its words into action, translating a public promise into tangible support for people trying to put their lives back together.
For flood victims still counting the cost of the disaster, the relief items may not undo the trauma or replace everything that was lost. But they can ease some of the immediate burdens – and offer a small measure of comfort – as families begin the long and difficult road to recovery.
