President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Hon. Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, Member of Parliament for the Asawase Constituency, as the Interior Minister-Designate.
The announcement was met with jubilant celebrations in the Asawase constituency, particularly among National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters who see the appointment as a recognition of their MP’s dedicated service.
A statement signed by the Acting Spokesperson for the President, Felix Kwakye, on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, also announced other key ministerial nominations.
Samuel Nartey George, MP for Ningo-Prampram, has been nominated as Minister for Communications, while Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, MP for Ellembelle, has been nominated as Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
Profile of Hon. Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka
Alhaji Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka has been a prominent figure in Ghana’s Parliament, representing the Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region since 2005.
He has served in the 4th through the 9th parliaments of Ghana’s 4th Republic and most recently held the position of Minority Chief Whip in the 8th Parliament.
A devout Muslim, Muntaka is married to Meimuna Ezideen Adul Wahab, and they have five children.
Early Life and Education
Born on October 17, 1971, in Kumbungu in northern Ghana, Muntaka’s academic journey began with his common entrance exam in 1987. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Economics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 2000 and an MSc in Development Policy and Planning from the same institution in 2004.
Before entering politics, Muntaka worked as the head of research at the RME unit of Adwumapa Buyers Limited, a cocoa-buying company.
Political Career and Parliamentary Achievements
Muntaka first entered Parliament on the ticket of the NDC in 2005 after winning a by-election in Asawase with a decisive majority. He succeeded the late Dr. Gibril Adamu Mohammed, also of the NDC.
Muntaka has retained his parliamentary seat through successive elections, consistently earning the trust and support of his constituents.
As an MP, Muntaka has served on numerous parliamentary committees, including the House Committee, Appointments Committee, Mines and Energy Committee, Health Committee, Business Committee, Standing Orders Committee, and the Committee of Selection.
Ministerial Roles
In 2009, Muntaka was appointed Minister for Youth and Sports by the late President John Evans Atta Mills. At age 39, his appointment was celebrated as a strategic choice to connect with Ghana’s youthful population.
However, his tenure ended following allegations of corruption, which led to his resignation after an investigation. He was succeeded by Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo.
Anticipated Role as Interior Minister
