The Nadowli/Kaleo District in the Upper West Region is set to receive two modern 24-hour economy markets under President John Dramani Mahama’s flagship economic transformation agenda, the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing, has announced.
One of the markets will be constructed in Nadowli as part of the central government’s 24-Hour Economy Programme, while a second market will be built in Sankana through a special intervention by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin.
Making the announcement on Monday, February 2, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Sankana Paramountcy, Hon. Puozuing said the projects reflect government’s commitment to expanding economic opportunities and driving inclusive development at the local level.
“The 24-Hour Economy Programme is about keeping our markets, businesses and productive sectors active beyond traditional working hours to create jobs, increase incomes and grow local economies,” the Minister said. “The Nadowli market is a direct government intervention, while the Sankana market, championed by the Speaker of Parliament, will complement our efforts and ensure balanced development across the district.”
President Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy Programme seeks to stimulate continuous economic activity by supporting round-the-clock operations in key sectors such as markets, transport, manufacturing, agro-processing and services. The policy is aimed at reducing unemployment—especially among the youth—boosting productivity, and strengthening domestic trade through improved infrastructure and security.
Hon. Puozuing stressed that the Nadowli/Kaleo markets will serve as economic hubs, attracting traders, extending trading hours and opening up new income streams for residents.
“These markets will not only expand commerce but also improve livelihoods. When we keep the economy running day and night, we give our people more chances to work, trade and prosper,” he added.
The District Chief Executive for Nadowli/Kaleo, Madam Mary Haruna, assured chiefs and elders that the District Assembly would work closely with traditional authorities in the siting and implementation of the projects.
“We will ensure the markets are strategically located to maximise accessibility and economic impact for the entire district,” she said.
The Paramount Chief of the Sankana Traditional Area, Naa Pagraninge Saakoe Mornah III, commended the government and the Speaker of Parliament for what he described as a timely intervention.
Hon. Puozuing called for sustained peace and cooperation between traditional authorities and government to guarantee smooth project execution, reiterating the administration’s commitment to inclusive development and continuous engagement at the grassroots.
Chiefs and residents of the district welcomed the announcement, expressing appreciation to the central government and the Speaker of Parliament for prioritising the Nadowli/Kaleo District in the rollout of the 24-Hour Economy Programme.
