Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and 2024 vice-presidential candidate alongside Dr. Bawumia, has announced plans to take legal steps against popular comedian OB Amponsah for using his name in a comedy show seeking a share of the proceeds.
Speaking to journalists, Dr. Prempeh expressed his willingness to have his lawyers communicate with the comedian over revenue sharing.
“If somebody who is a comedian is using my name and is filling courts, I am very, very happy. I thank him because he is putting my name out there for free,” he said.
“However, I will let my lawyers write to him so that we share the proceeds, the revenue because I am unemployed.”
The politician’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about the boundaries of comedic parody and intellectual property rights.
OB Amponsah posted a video on his YouTube page titled “DON’T FORGET NAPO. LIVE FROM BUKOM BOXING ARENA.”
This video has gone viral, resulting in many netizens making fun of the 2024 running mate of the NPP.
In the video, the comedian made fun of the commentaries made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, from his nomination as running mate for Dr. Bawumia to how he conducted his campaign.
OB Amponsah discussed several issues. He started by saying, “Look, Bawumia can win 10 votes, NAPO will say something, 7 will clear. You guys saw it, don’t put it on me. I didn’t know much about NAPO until he became Vice President Bawumia’s running mate. I knew him as Minister of Energy and Minister of Education. He sacked Teacher Kwadwo, but that’s not the point. You guys know what he did to Teacher Kwadwo, right? So I knew him for that.”
He also highlighted NAPO’s visit to His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II after he was named running mate. He added that Otumfuo advised him not to be arrogant, as people say around, and that he nurtured him.
According to OB Amponsah, NAPO didn’t listen to Otumfuo’s advice and mounted a platform to attack Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, referring to him as “Your Kwame Nkrumah.”
OB Amponsah also talked about NAPO attacking former President Prof. Evans John Fiifi Atta Mills. He said, “NAPO went to attack Atta Mills.” NAPO referenced past presidents and said, “the one that has died.” He jokingly said, “NAPO, Atta Mills? Like, mention his name, errr.”
He also raised the issue of NAPO saying on Peace FM that God sleeps and that the NDC’s 24-hour economy can’t be possible.
According to the comedian, he imagined the confusion in heaven about what NAPO said: “Angel Gabriel, did you hear what the boy said? Have you seen me sleeping before? Tell me the truth. Michael, when did I sleep?”
He continued cracking jokes about NAPO and said, “You thought NAPO had finished? I’m about to kill it. NAPO went for a campaign, held an NPP parliamentary candidate’s hand, and said, ‘Mahama nie, Lomotho nie.’ Even the MP was like, ‘It’s not Mahama, don’t raise my hand.’”
