The fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has intensified in the Ashanti Region following a dawn operation by the National Security team that led to the seizure of five excavators allegedly linked to illegal mining activities at Beposo in the Bosomtwe District.

The operation, according to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, was carried out after credible intelligence was provided by whistleblowers regarding suspected illegal mining activities in the area.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Dr. Amoakohene said the swoop resulted in the impoundment of the excavators, while investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute individuals connected to the illegal operation.
He added that authorities are also pursuing earlier suspects linked to illegal mining activities as part of efforts to clamp down on the practice.
The Regional Minister expressed appreciation to the whistleblowers whose timely information contributed to the successful intervention.

Dr. Amoakohene reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting forests, water bodies, and the environment, stressing that illegal mining activities would not be tolerated in the Ashanti Region.

“The fight against illegal mining remains firm and uncompromising,” he stated, adding that galamsey has no place in the region.
