The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has welcomed recent public reflections by former President John Agyekum Kufuor on the performance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, saying his remarks validate long-standing criticisms raised by the opposition party.
In a statement issued by Deputy National Communications Officer Godwin Ako Gunn, the NDC said President Kufuor’s acknowledgement of governance failures within his own party is “significant and deserving of national attention.”
According to the NDC, the former President’s comments confirm that the Akufo-Addo administration abandoned the governance principles that, in his view, contributed to the NPP’s electoral victory in 2016.
Kufuor’s Reported Concerns
President Kufuor is said to have expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as unilateral decision-making and the lack of consultation within the Akufo-Addo government.
The NDC claims the former President revealed he was not consulted on several major national decisions, including the National Cathedral project, the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, and controversies such as the Power Distribution Services (PDS) scandal.
The opposition party argues that these issues contributed to economic hardship and loss of investor confidence.
NDC Criticizes Kufuor’s Silence
While acknowledging Kufuor’s stature as a former leader, the NDC questioned the timing of his remarks, noting that they come after the NPP has suffered electoral setbacks and internal divisions.
“His long silence during the years of reckless decision-making contributed to the suffering of ordinary citizens,” the statement read. The party suggested that earlier intervention from the former President might have influenced policy direction.
Party Reiterates Criticism of NPP Administration
The NDC said it has consistently argued that the Akufo-Addo administration was marked by “arrogance, unilateralism and disregard for collective wisdom,” adding that Kufuor’s reflections reinforce this assessment.
The party reiterated its view that national leadership must prioritize accountability and prudent resource management over “vanity projects” and partisan interests.
Appeal to Voters
Looking ahead, the NDC said it remains committed to offering leadership that “listens, consults and places the welfare of citizens above all else.” The statement urged Ghanaians to reflect on the former President’s comments and what they imply about the NPP’s governance record.
“Ghana deserves leadership that is honest, accountable and people-centered,” the party said.
