NHIA disburses GH¢400 million to settle healthcare providers’ claims

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has taken a significant step to address outstanding claims from healthcare providers across the country by releasing GH¢400 million.

This payment, which covers claims for April and May 2024, marks a historic move towards enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of healthcare delivery under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

In an official statement, NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye emphasized the importance of this substantial disbursement, describing it as a key initiative in the Authority’s ongoing efforts to maintain a robust and efficient healthcare system.

“This release not only bridges the debt gap but also reinforces our commitment to ensuring that outstanding payments are within the agreed three-month reimbursement period,” Dr. Aboagye stated.

A Series of Strategic Payments

The latest payment is part of a series of financial interventions made by the NHIA throughout the year to settle outstanding claims and support the operational needs of healthcare facilities.

The Authority’s consistent disbursement of funds has been crucial in maintaining the quality of care provided to NHIS members. Notable payments made by the NHIA this year include:

  • GH¢300 million released earlier in the year to cover claims up to January 2024.
  • GH¢151 million disbursed on August 17, 2024, to settle claims from March 2024 for higher-tier healthcare providers and from April 2024 for lower-tier facilities.
  • GH¢135.6 million paid in July 2024, settling claims up to February 2024 for higher-tier providers and up to March 2024 for lower-tier facilities.
  • GH¢170.8 million released on April 30, 2024, primarily covering claims from January and February 2024 for lower-tier facilities, and up to November 2023 for upper-tier providers.
  • GH¢180 million disbursed on March 22, 2024, to various categories of healthcare providers for claims submitted up to December 2023.
  • GH¢130.2 million paid on February 13, 2024, to over 4,850 healthcare providers nationwide for claims largely submitted in October 2023.

These strategic payments have been essential in enhancing the operational efficiency of healthcare facilities and ensuring that NHIS members receive high-quality care. Dr. Aboagye reiterated the NHIA’s commitment to maintaining strong partnerships with healthcare providers and ensuring timely reimbursement of claims.

Expanding Coverage and Ensuring Quality Care

The NHIS continues to offer comprehensive healthcare coverage to its subscribers, with a benefit package that covers over 95 percent of disease conditions affecting residents.

The scheme also includes over 550 formulations on the NHIS medicines list, ensuring that a wide range of medical needs are met under the program.

“We are grateful to healthcare providers for their dedication and crucial role in the success of the NHIS,” Dr. Aboagye said. He assured all stakeholders that the NHIA remains committed to engaging with them to address any concerns and improve the efficiency of service delivery, claims processing, and payments.

Strengthening Ghana’s Healthcare System

The ongoing financial support from the NHIA represents a positive step towards strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system. By ensuring that healthcare providers are reimbursed promptly, the NHIA is helping to secure the sustainability of the NHIS and the delivery of quality healthcare services to all subscribers.

As the NHIA continues to prioritize the timely release of funds and the resolution of outstanding claims, the Authority’s actions are expected to further enhance the trust and confidence of both healthcare providers and NHIS members in the country’s healthcare system.
