The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated processes to expel former party member and senior figure, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, following comments he made during a television interview that the party says are damaging and unconstitutional.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP said it had taken “due notice” of remarks made by Prof. Frimpong Boateng during an interview on Channel One TV on Monday, January 12.
During the interview, Prof. Frimpong Boateng reportedly described the NPP as a “fake party” and stated that he no longer considers himself a member.
He also made allegations that the party’s 2023 presidential primary was rigged in favour of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who emerged as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.
The NPP has categorically rejected the claims, describing them as “baseless and unsubstantiated.” According to the party, the 2023 presidential primary was conducted in a free, fair, transparent and credible manner, and its outcome reflected the will of party delegates.
“The said primary has been widely acknowledged by all candidates who participated, as well as by well-meaning members of the party,” the statement said.
The party further described Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s comments as “highly reprehensible” and inimical to the values, unity and integrity of the NPP.
As a result, the party says it has invoked the relevant provisions of its constitution to begin the process of expelling him, stressing that all steps will be carried out in accordance with due process.
Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng is a former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and has previously been a prominent member of the NPP.
